What is Thai Yoga Massage?
Thai Yoga Massage (also known as Thai Massage) is an ancient form of
therapeutic healing. It combines acupressure, energy balancing,
stretching, and yoga asanas. Thai yoga massage is based on a yoga
tradition that vital energy (prana) flows through a series of channels
in the human energy body. It is believed that stress and disease are
caused by blockages in that energy flow and the aim of Thai yoga massage
is to release those blockages, restoring equilibrium and harmony,
promoting a return to good health.
Benefits of Thai Yoga Massage:
- Increases flexibility and range of motion
- Improves postural alignment
- Improves circulation
- Increases energy level
- Balances mind, body and spirit
- Relieves physical and mental tension and emotional stress
- Deep meditative states of relaxation
Thai Yoga Massage works on the muscles, ligaments, nerves, joints, as
well as the internal organs. It also includes nervous system peripheral
stimulation therapy as found in Chinese acupuncture, Shiatsu, and hand
and foot reflexology, all of which deal with balancing the flow of
energy within the body. This sort of emphasis in bodywork serves the
purpose of releasing the nervous system so that body can relax into a
position of healing itself.
History of Thai Yoga Massage
The history of Thai Massage can be traced back 2500 years to the time of
Buddha. It is credited to a physician in India called Father Doctor
Shivago Komarpaj. He is thought to be the father of medicine. He was a
contemporary of the Buddha and the physician to the Buddhist monks and
nuns who preserved his teachings. There is no written documentation on
Thai Massage because most of the ancient texts were destroyed during a
war with the Burmese in 1776. The surviving texts were inscribed in
stone and set into the walls of a temple – Wat Po, in Bangkok. Today
Thai Massage is passed down in Thailand in the form of an oral
tradition.
